Adam's Staying Alive 2013
Story
Adam's Staying Alive for the Amy Gillett ride in 2013!
As you may or may not know, I participated in the 2012 Amy Gillett Charity Ride.
Unfortunately, whilst I was quite fit at the time and this was a common ride distance for me, I did not make it past the top of the first climb before suffering a Cardiac Arrest. Fortunately for me, because I was on the Amy Gillett ride, at the front of the bunch of 3000 cyclists, not far behind me was a group of highly qualified Anaesthetists, Emergency Doctors and EMTs, all fellow cyclists.
They proceeded to apply lifesaving CPR for 15 minutes to keep me alive while an ambulance could find its way through the crowd. I owe my life to these dedicated individuals and their hard work at the scene. I also owe it of course, to the large amount of luck that I was on this particular ride, not on my own, in the darkness, where most of my cycling generally occurred. The contact and support from the Amy Gillett Foundation and its management after the incident was greatly appreciated by my family and myself, when I eventually came to.
Anyway, to cut a VERY long story short, I am back on the bike (thanks to the ICU at Flinders Medical Centre, and an internal cardiac defibrillator mounted in my chest) and am facing my demons by taking on the ride again this year... hence my title: "Adam's Staying Alive 2013"
In my thanks to one of the people who saved my life, who also happens to be on the board of the Amy Gillett Foundation, I promised I would aim to raise money for the Foundation as a small gesture of my thanks.
This is where YOU come in... If you are happy to help me, I would appreciate any contribution, great or small! The Amy Gillett Foundation is a great cause, helping support the safety and welfare of cyclists everywhere... like me!
Here's to staying alive in 2013!
With my sincere thanks
Adam
Activity
Amy Gillett Foundation
The Amy Gillett Foundation (AGF) began its work in 2006 in the name of Amy Gillett, who was tragically killed as a result of being hit by a motorist whilst cycling with the Australian Women’s Road cycling team in Germany in 2005.
The Amy Gillett Foundation's vision is for safe bicycling throughout Australia in order to achieve the ultimate target of zero bicycling fatalities.
The Foundation promotes a safe and harmonious relationship of shared respect between bicyclists and motorists – to highlight the importance of being responsible every time we head out on the road whether we're on two wheels or on four. Why? Because everyone deserves to arrive at their destination safely irrespective of their chosen mode of transport.
